You usually have to read the sentences in Gudrun Hasle’s text-based works a few times, before the meaning becomes apparent. The artist is dyslexic, but rather than receiving help to write correctly, she has made imperfection her trademark. In embroideries, pictures, films and installations, Gudrun Hasle interweaves memories of her own childhood and youth with expressions of every teenager’s – and every human being’s – vulnerability and fear of being an outsider. With statements such as “I am lonely”, Hasle has won wide recognition as a spokesman for the fragility and originality of the individual at a time when perfect people tend to dominate the TV-screens.
