For centuries the beard has been a significant part of male identity. Facial hair has dictated fashion trends and several classic beard styles have literally been part of uniforms for men – musketeers, Hungarian hussars and British army officers to mention but a few. All over the world – including Denmark- beards are becoming increasingly popular among all kinds of men from rock musicians and hipsters to politicians and business people.
In October 2015, the 6th World Beard and Moustache Championships were held in Leogang, Austria. 350 participants from 22 different countries competed in 18 categories.
What used to be a competition for elderly beard eccentrics has now also become an event for the young and trendy. Moreover, a lot of the contestants have very specific reasons for having beards.
This exhibition by Danish photographer Lasse Bak Mejlvang presents a broad range of these distinctive men and their fascinating stories.

Lasse Bak Mejlvang (b 1981) is both a fashion and reportage photographer. His series of beard portraits recently received an Award of Excellence in the renowned American photo contest Pictures of the Year International.
